Project „ Bicycles for all “
Bicycles that can be rented to be used for riding trough the town of Skopje, as substitute to cars, or other means of transport that contribute to air pollution is the assignment that this project aims to fulfill.
With area of 7.000 ha, 22 km length, 9 km wide, mild inclinations of 0.1° to 0.7°, average temperature of 4°С to 30°C, maximum 32 snow days, 30 days of temperatures bellow zero, 48,5km of existing bicycle paths (out of which 1,5 km one-way and 47 km two-way paths) contribute to enlist Skopje in the cities that have excellent preconditions for cycling.
Unorganised traffic and air pollution from transportation are major and increasing problems in Skopje. The transport has significant impact on climate change by emitting CO2 and other greenhouse gasses. Still, the practice of most citizens of Skopje is to drive their vehicles in spite of low organisation of traffic in the city. Statistically, most cars in Skopje have a single passenger in them, and therefore we can estimate that most citizens of Skopje who own a car each year emit an extra ton of CO2.
The project “Bicycles for all” is a project that will start the process of bicycle utilization as an environmentally friendly public, urban transport model. The idea behind the project is to enable the citizens of Skopje to use the bicycle as a mean for local transport.
Time-frame:
01 April 2008 - 31 September 2009
Goals
The main goal of the project “Bicycles for all” is to decrease the emission of glass house gasses emission in Skopje trough promotion of the bicycle as a mean for transport.
In order to fulfill its goal, the project will have two specific assignments::
1. To enable accessible bicycle renting in the town of Skopje.
2. To promote the bicycle as a mean for public transport.
